Diagnosis

Generic Liver Shunt

  • Kelly was diagnosed about five years ago.

This definition of a liver shunt is probably the easies to understand.

The portal vein is an important blood vessel which normally enters the liver and allows toxic elements in the blood to go through the normal detoxification process. When your dog has a liver shunt, the portal vein is not properly connected and therefore, blood normally detoxified by the liver will bypass it and go directly into circulation throughout the body. Additionally, the liver will often have poor development.

I have found much more definitions on that, often times they bare so much more confusion that explanation.

The way someone put it to me was: your dog liver is a filter, it cleans the blood from toxins, a shunt is leak on the liver, the blood will leak through the body with our without toxins. (It’s hard to tell) He said, think on what you feed and that is what she has on her little body.

The symptoms on much dogs vary, Kelly had unique symptoms, no, I don’t mean it just because she is my dog.

The day I took her in for her vet appointment, I was expecting to heard that she had diabetes. Because her symptoms where extreme thirst and urination, she always suffer acid reflex, but almost never she vomited her food.

They did a whole lot more test on her to be sure, the poor thing had to be fasted for like two days on the row. Did I mention that she “loves” food!!

  • What happened next?

One week after

She was put on two different medications and veterinary

prescription food. Yes, that food. Back then my dogs will

only eat kibble, Avery expensive kind of kibble, but still

kibble. ( not the point )

Her heart seem to gone down heal ! And what are the

medications for?

She was better before all the test where done.

That day I decided to stop the

medications, and I jump on my

computer and search other

alternatives.

The Veterinarian mention to me that

she may not live long, because

surgery was not and option, she was

an older dog. ( age 7 at that time)

My thought was, she may not be with

me much long, but she is not going to

be miserable.
